Tagsa Uibhist History

The groundwork for the formation of Tagsa Uibhist was first established when local resident Jean Branagan, who was investigating the care needs of the local community and the possibility of setting up a Crossroads scheme in Uist, approached the Uist Council of Voluntary Organisations, who were interested in setting up such a scheme. This led to the commissioning of a feasability study, which determined a gap in the provision of such care in Uist. Following these findings, a steering group was formed to explore and develop them further.

People with dementia in Uist were at the time being cared for by Alzheimer Scotland. Following prolonged discussions with Alzheimer Scotland, Crossroads (Scotland), Comhairle nan Eilean Siar's Social Work department, and the Western Isles Health Board over a period of two years, it was agreed that all these organisations would give assistance to enable the setting up of a scheme providing joint care (Dementia and Crossroads care, with funding from CnES and WIHB). A local management committee was formed through UCVO, who organised public meetings throughout Uist, and Tagsa Uibhist came into being on 13th December 1999. The name means 'Uist Support' in Gaelic.
