Our community transport arm encompasses a number of services, including a shopping service, Dial-A-Bus, and social outings & lunch clubs.
Our community transport services first began operations in 2000, when a pilot project offering accessible transport for weekly social outings in South Uist was established. This was made possible through grant funding from the Scottish Executive Rural Transport Initiative. In 2001, two-year funding was received from the Scottish Executive to extend the service to North Uist.
Our first 16-seater wheelchair accessible minibus was purchased in 2003, after a successful application to the Scottish Executive for capital funding, with matching revenue funding from the Big Lottery Fund to employ two transport staff. The new service commenced in July 2003, providing door-to-door transport for people requiring support to access shops, banks, post office and medical appointments. This service is still provided to people across the islands on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
2004 saw the purchase of a smaller wheelchair accessible vehicle, allowing us to commence our Dial-A-Bus service - a door-to-door service for individuals to attend medical appointments, collect medication, and access respite in residential homes.
In 2006, a new application to the Scottish Executive was approved to purchase a custom built 16-seater wheelchair accessible minibus, along with revenue funding to recruit a transport coordinator and two transport staff.
In 2009, Tagsa Uibhist Community Services was established to deliver a handyman and domestic cleaning service. The company now also oversees our Horticultural Project and Mental Health and Wellbeing Project, as well as our community transport services.
